In the past, the only options for tooth replacement were removable dentures or bridges, which could be uncomfortable and unnatural looking, and needed to be replaced over time. Fortunately, a new technology has made dentures and bridges nearly obsolete – dental implants. Ventura-area dentist Steven C. Greenman, D.D.S. specializes in this form of restorative dentistry.
Dental implants are different from other forms of tooth restoration, including porcelain dental veneers and crowns. They are more permanent than removable dentures, or even bridges, which only tend to last about ten years. The support post of the implant grows into and bonds to the bone in the jaw and is completely permanent. An artificial tooth is then attached to the support post. This means that adjacent teeth are unaffected by the procedure, unlike a bridge, which is cemented to the teeth on either side of a gap.
The most common types of dental implants, called root-form implants, are created when the dentist makes an incision in the gum and places the support for the implant into the bone. In as little as six weeks, the bone will heal and integrate itself around the support, creating a secure anchor. To complete the dental implants, our Thousand Oaks staff will attach artificial teeth to the support posts.
Dr. Greenman sees several benefits to dental implants: they promote more natural chewing and overall appearance, and they are easier to clean than traditional tooth replacements. He also understands that some patients may be very anxious about this type of procedure; therefore, he is always happy to discuss options such as sedation dentistry.
Every patient has different restorative dental needs; many of them can be met with the expert application of dental implants. Ventura-area residents should contact Steven C. Greenman, D.D.S. for a consultation, so that he and his staff can discuss the available options.
